Getting started

  1. Create an account with a work email and confirm it from the link we send. Disposable inboxes are refused, because alerts need an address that still works next month.
  2. Add a contact under Alerts: an email address, a Slack incoming webhook, or your own webhook. Send a test to be sure it arrives.
  3. Add a monitor: the URL to check, how often, and who to alert. You can also check for a word on the page, expect particular status codes, or send headers.
  4. Optionally publish a status page that shows your monitors to your clients.

How alerts work

A single failed check is usually a network blip, so it doesn't alert. When one region fails, two more regions check straight away. You're alerted when two of three agree the site is down, and again when it recovers. On Free a check runs from one region, rotating through all six; on paid plans every check runs from every region.

Verifying a domain

Some things need proof that a site is yours, so our checks can't be pointed at someone else's server:

In the dashboard, open Domains and add the domain. We show a TXT record like the one below. Add it at your DNS provider, wait a few minutes, and press Check.

Type TXT
Name _zuzzy.yourclient.in
Value zuzzy-verify=3f9c…

Verifying yourclient.in covers every subdomain, such as shop.yourclient.in. Verifying a subdomain covers only that subdomain and those under it. Once verified, a domain stays verified even if you later remove the record. IP addresses can't be verified, so checks of a bare IP stay at 5 minutes or slower.

Fair use

To keep our checkers from becoming a nuisance to anyone's site:

Allowlisting our checks

Checks come from fixed addresses, listed on the IP addresses page (also as plain text), and identify themselves as ZuzzyBot. See About our checks for the full User-Agent.

Opting a site out

If you run a site and don't want our checks, use the opt-out form with an email address at that domain. After you confirm by email, every monitor for the domain and its subdomains stops, in every account. Accounts that have verified the domain are not affected, since they've shown they control it.
